South Fork Borough looking to fill police protection; neighbors worry about public safety

By Melanie Gillespie

SOUTH FORK, Pa. —

South Fork Borough Council is on the hunt to hire an entire police department, but could the idea of regional policing still be an option?

The police chief resigned, in addition to a part-time officer last month.

After the town was hit with two burglaries last week, neighbors are now wondering is public safety at risk?

"Everybody is at fault. Public safety should take precedence," Mark Wadsworth said.

South Fork neighbors sounded off to council Monday night.

Some, like Wadsworth, who says they're discouraged over the dismantling of the department.

"Personal agendas, political agendas, whatever it is… Must disappear. We're going down a road with a sign that says dead end,"  Wadsworth said.

Former Chief Scott Stoltz and Kelly Bolvin resigned in February.

The two cited a new memorandum and shift changes as a reason for the departure.

"We need help from our neighbors," Wadsworth told council Monday night.

Wadsworth said agreements in years past with Summerhill and neighboring Croyle Township fell by the wayside, but thinks regional policing is a must.

"What we are doing is unsustainable. We don't have the population to sustain that police protection," Wadsworth said.

The heightened awareness follows two burglaries last week at a church and a grocery store.

As for Wadsworth, who's also in public safety, an extra penny is protection worth paying for.

"We know it's expensive. We're not going to cut our services to anybody in the public over a dollar. [We] can't," Wadsworth added.

Mayor Don Hudson did not want to go on camera, but said the police committee plans on reviewing 17 applications and will narrow it down to 2, yet is still considering regional policing.

The police committee is scheduled to meet Friday evening.
