Speaking Out For Jared

HOLLIDAYSBURG —

"He would tell all these ghost stories and say a monster was coming to get him and I'd always try to change it to make it a happy ending," said Jared Klein's Aunt Elizabeth Muoio.

But, there was no happy ending this time for Jared. On December 26, 2005, Nathan Shaw came into Jared's home and attacked his mother Christina Muoio. That's when the 6-year-old unselfishly became a hero.

"He jumped in the middle and tried to stop it," said Christina. "When I was unconscious, Nathan kept telling my daughter to shut up and kept screaming at her. Jared kept telling her he loved her and to please stop crying so she wouldn't get hurt. He tried to make sure she was safe because I couldn't."

When Christina came to, Shaw was gone and she found her little boy dead on the floor. Her baby girl was alive thanks to Jared. Now, all Christina has are memories.

"He had a smile that just lit up a room and a laugh that was so contagious," said Christina.

A laugh that still rings through the ears of his cousins, who said they will never forget him.

"If we ever forget to pray for him, she'll say you forgot to pray for Jared," said his Aunt Elizabeth.

Jared's grandmother, Mum-Mum as he called her, was so proud of the brave boy. She told Channel 6 what she would say if she could see Jared just one more time.

"I was sorry I wasn't there to help him," said Peggy Miller. "That he was my savior."
