St. Marys Plant Makes New Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs

ST. MARYS, Pa. —

The light bulb, as we know it is changing.

Federal regulations passed in 2007 ban the use of traditional incandescent light bulbs by 2014.

Companies have been working to find more energy-efficient versions of the bulb.

In Elk County, workers at one plant are making new halogen light bulbs.

They look similar to traditional incandescent bulbs but are slightly smaller.

The bulb creates light using a halogen capsule.

Right now, the Sylvania-Osram plant in St. Marys is making both types of light bulb.

About 1.4 million light bulbs are made at the plant every day.

Another type of energy efficient light bulb is the compact fluorescent light bulb.

Officials said those bulbs are made mostly overseas.
