State College Community Upset over Proposed Pipeline

By Stef Davis

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Dozens of people taking to the microphone at the State College borough building Monday night. Their concern--a proposed natural gas pipeline set to run right through their neighborhood.

Smita harti, State College, says, “My kids are here. There is a daycare across the street. There is another daycare down the block. Imagine having kids running around with a pipeline if there is a leak or an explosion."

The pipeline is set to run from Penn State's power plant through parts of the borough near Prospect Avenue. Penn State is switching their coal-powered plant to natural gas--that's why the new line is needed. But people in State College question why a university project should upset life in borough neighborhoods.

Johan Zwart, State College, says, "Why would we want to live on that if it’s no benefit to us?"

State College council says it really has no control over where the pipeline is laid. State law supersedes any ordinances or restrictions the borough places if they choose to do so. Still citizens aren’t satisfied.

Pam Steckler, Ferguson Township, says, “If we never question authority or the state then we'll never make a change."
