State College Mayor Presides Over Same-Sex Commitment Ceremony

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. —

One by one, four same-sex couples went before State College Mayor Bill Welch and made their commitment.

Two gay and two lesbian couples took part in the ceremony.

Katerina Sinclair and her partner, Delia Guzman, were one of the couples involved.

Sinclair said she was surprised by the positive reaction across the Penn State campus.

"We walked outside and saw this huge rainbow flag," she said. "We were expecting signs and protestors."

Welch was praised for his decision to preside over the ceremony.

He said Saturday's event stayed true to its intended purpose.

"It's a celebration of love and a different type of family," Walsh said.

Organizers estimated attendance for the ceremony at around 800 people.
