State College State Stores Asked to Close on State Patty's Day

By Gary Sinderson

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

The state stores are shut down Monday for Presidents Day and the President of Penn State, along with the State College mayor, and local business chamber president, would like to see this state store and three others closed all day again this Saturday.

We obtained a copy of the letter they sent to the LCB making that request, citing the numerous problems caused by the State Patty's Day drinking.

In fact, State College Police Chief Tom King says for each of the past three years, it’s been the busiest day of the year for police. But in talking with students, they don’t think shutting down state stores will make a difference.

Bhavik Batl, Penn State student, says, “It won’t matter, they'll still get drunk. It’s a big party weekend.”

Alice Chen, Penn State student, says, “Well it might make a little difference, but not a huge part.”

Last year, a dozen downtown bars and bottle shops in State College voluntarily closed for State Patty’s Day. And at least several of them have indicated they won’t be open this Saturday either.
