State High Upgrades Take a Step Forward

By STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Stef Davis

Students at State College High may have had the day off, but their school board was hard at work, pushing ahead with its multi-million dollar upgrade project.

Julie Miller, SCASD, says, "Accepting the calendar so there is something concrete to work from, so yes, it is a step in the right direction.”

The board voted Monday night to approve the project's calendar at their public meeting. They haven't decided yet as to what exactly that project will be--renovating the current school or building a new one. They've kept the process very transparent, keeping the community as involved as possible because the taxpayers are the ones footing the bill.

Dorothea Stahl, State College school board, says, "Everyone is very aware of why we came to the decision we came to and why we are moving forward with the project."

And the public is taking advantage of the open forum. Pete Schempf of Harris Township is a State High alum. He wants to make sure the board is getting the best bang for the taxpayer's buck.

Schempf says, “Its fiscal responsibility, that’s my main concern. I am a tax payer just like everyone else in the area."

The school district knows just how important the public's opinion is...because the project is ultimately in their hands.

Miller adds, "This is coming down to a voter referendum. So the community will decide if the funding for this project, whatever that project may be, can move forward"
