One Republican lawmaker said he wants 10,000 more police officers on the streets statewide.
House Speaker Emeritus John Perzel of Philadelphia is reintroducing legislation to create permanent funding to provide up to 10,000 new police positions over the next four years.
"My legislation has been called innovative -- groundbreaking by some -- because for the first time ever, the state would be an active partner with local communities in fighting crime and insuring public safety," Perzel said.
Perzel's bill won approval in the state House in the last legislative session, but died in the Senate.
