State Rep Claims PSU Wants to Stall Trustee Reform

By Gary Sinderson

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Just Monday we were in Harrisburg at a hearing by a State Senate committee where senators questioned Penn State trustees on the reform proposal. The senators confirmed they plan to discuss the issue further, but over in the State House, the representative who originated the reform legislation is angry about why the legislation is stalled in the house.

Late last year Representative Scott Conklin introduced trustee reform legislation in the State House recently he acknowledged it remains stuck in committee.

Rep. Scott Conklin says, “We’ve sent e-mails and notes but so far it’s still in committee.”

But Tuesday, Conklin tells us, “I was informed there are certain people at Penn State who do not want to see even a vote on our reform package. I am angry that one of the greatest universities in the world is being held hostage by a select few who do not want to lose their power, do not want to be brought under the ethics act and are thumbing their noses at transparency.”

Conklin’s statement apparently aimed at some trustee members, but just Monday one of those trustees telling a Senate committee they are open to reform.

James Broadhurst, Penn State trustee, says, “We’re open to reform.”

But if the measure stalls in the state house, no matter what the senate does, then talk of legislative reform of Penn State's trustees will be going nowhere.
