Stimulus Checks On The Way To Your Mailbox

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

It's payday for millions of Americans as the first round of checks are beginning to pop up in bank accounts. However, there's new questions on whether they will stimulate economic growth or just help people survive.

Shoppers at the Market Basket in Richland Township told Channel 6 News they keep looking online, but many have not received their checks yet.

Several Americans have said they want to save the money or use it to pay down debt, but is that really possible in the high-cost world in which we are leaving? Market Basket shoppers said no. They claim with the high cost of gas and food right now, the extra $600 to $1,200 is going to go right out the window.

"Gas is going up every day," said shopper Lisa Kris. "It's hard to keep the gas tanks full, and we have kids with soccer practice. It's just hard."

"We were just going through the store saying we can't afford to buy cheese," said shopper Sandy Cook. "It's up to $4 a pound. We keep having to say no to things so we can pay for gas."

The government is hoping people spend the money on big-screen TVs, furniture, or maybe some nice jewelry. However, shoppers said unfortunately that money will likely end up in the hands of the oil companies.
