Strong Storm Topples Circus Tent; 1 Seriously Injured

SEWARD, Pa. —

A high wind storm swept through several counties, taking down a circus tent filled with families.

The Lewis and Clark Circus was in Seward performing two shows Thursday evening. The event was a fundraiser for the Seward Fire Department.

Fifteen minutes after the first show started, the ring master announced they were evacuating because of the storm.

"As soon as he said that, the tent came down; the poles were flying; people were scattered everywhere," said Rebecca Baird, who was trapped inside of the tent.

One person was seriously hurt and is being treated at the hospital. About a dozen others had some cuts and bruises.

Albert Buchanan, the owner of the Lewis and Clark Circus, said this was the second time a storm has taken down his tent. Buchanan said he didn't know that the storm was heading their way.

The circus is still working on a way to refund the tickets.
