Success By 6: Blair County Teacher Honored

A Blair County teacher received national recognition for a job well done - but he says the honor isn't his alone.

Richard Imler's advanced-placement biology course is among the most popular classes offered at Hollidaysburg Area High School.

As his 11th grade student David Decoskey said, "He knows how to relay information to the students so they understand it...and he does it in a fun interactive way."

In response, Imler was named the Siemens Foundation Teacher of the Year for Pennsylvania. The prestigious national awards program celebrates students who excel in advanced-placement math and science, as well as teachers and schools that lead the nation in AP performance and participation.

Eric Dupont, another 11th grader, said Imler was able to "groom" a group of students.

"I think that's partly why he won the award. He groomed a group of students that were able to score higher than any others in the state, and that's very impressive," Dupont said.

Imler was also recognized for his use of technology in the classroom, a hands-on approach to learning that has made a tremendous impact on students.

"(Students) use technology all the time. It's part of their life and it's an important way for us to reach them," Imler said.

His students agree, and say Imler's enthusiasm for science and research is contagious.

"I always tell him using all this equipment makes me feel like a doctor, so my dad teases me I should go to medical school because I enjoy this class so much," said 11th grader Michal Chorny.

Imler thanked students for sharing their success with him. Even though he called it a team effort, students see it a little differently.

"He thinks it's all us...but it's really all him," Chorny said.
