Success By 6: Teens Learn Valuable Life Skills Through Civil Air Patrol

Best known for its work in search and rescue and disaster relief, the Civil Air Patrol is broadening its role in the 21st century.

As a result, local units in Cambria and surrounding counties said they are building strong citizens for the future by allowing those ages 12 to 16 to participate.

The patrol is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and is involved in everything from homeland security operations to counter drug reconnaissance missions.

For the participants, the taste of military life teaches discipline and self control, hones leadership skills and builds self-esteem.

But, there's also much more.

"There are so many facets to what we do. It's not just the basic format... We're active all the time doing exercises, practicing and going out in the field," said Capt. Sam Allison, commanding officer of Unit 1501.

Members also give of their time to benefit the communities in which they live. Each year for the past several years, cadets have helped the U.S. Marine Corp with its local Toys For Tots campaign.

Allison said the skills cadets learn can be carried with then no matter what life or career path they choose.

"Integrity, morals, values -- everything a young person needs in this day and age to survive," Allison said.
