SUMMER IN THE CITY KICKED OFF TODAY. IT'S THE SUMMER PROGRAM FOR JOHNSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS. FOR PARENTS IT'S FREE!
ABOUT 500 STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE PART IN THE PROGRAM AGAIN THIS YEAR. IT'S THE 4TH YEAR FOR THE PROGRAM. 12 COUNSELORS WORK WITH THE KIDS, INCLUDING TUTORS AND PARENTS WHO VOLUNTEER. THEY HAVE ACTIVITIES LIKE ARTS AND CRAFTS, SPORTS, AND FIELD TRIPS. THE MONEY FOR THIS PROGRAM COMES FROM A FEDERAL GRANT THAT'S OPERATED BY THE STATE.
BILL LOHR, THE PROGRAM COORDINATOR SAYS, "We offer them cereals and things for breakfast and toast. Lunch is a big variety of things through our summer feeding program. It's all nutritional."
THE PROGRAM TAKES PLACE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND EAST SIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FROM 9 TO 3 ON WEEKDAYS UNTIL AUGUST 13TH. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS FREE PROGRAM CALL THE JOHNSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT.
