Supervisors Sort Out Water Problems

ALTOONA, Pa. —

Some residents who live along 8th Street in Lakemont have been spending thousands of dollars a year on bottled water, for the last 30 years, because their water is contaminated. But the Logan Township supervisors said their problems are no longer falling on deaf ears.

The Lakemont residents thought the problem was a leak from the septic tank on the blighted property that neighbors their homes. However, Logan Township supervisor Joe Metzgar said as far as they can tell, that's not the problem. But nevertheless, they are requiring the 5th Avenue homeowner to tap into municipal sewage. Additionally, they've told him he has to clean up his home. Township officials are also planing to tighten the township's blighted property ordinance. Metzgar said one blighted property is too many.

Township officials are also getting a headcount of how many people in the neighborhood have water problems, so they can help them get drinkable water.

"We're going write a letter and approach the City Water Authority to see about extending the lines. And we're also going to see what kind of help we can get these folks financially, if they need it, to help them with their tap fees," said Metzgar.

Metzgar said the changes will take time. But residents said they'll be meeting with township officials soon. In addtional, they said the reports on Channel Six News have helped get the ball rolling.
