Surveillance video helps police track down suspected burglar

By Maria Miller

WINDBER, pa. —

Police said surveillance footage that aired on 6 News earlier this week helped them track down a suspected burglar. Now, police said they're focusing on finding his victims.

So far Derek Clark has been charged with breaking into three vehicles in Windber, but police said the surveillance video shows him breaking into even more. Now that he's handed over what he took, police said they have more things than were reported missing.

"He actually provided more items than the original victim had reported," said Paint Township police Detective Daniel Croyle.

Police said the video showed Clark breaking into several vehicles and now that they have the items he took, they're looking for the owners.

"We have items in our custody now that were stolen from vehicles but we don't have an owner for those," said Croyle. "We've asked that people check their vehicles, look for items that may be missing. They might not be aware of it."

In the meantime Croyle has the same advice as from every other police agency: Lock your doors.

"This is a crime of opportunity. When they try the door to your vehicle and it's locked, chances are they're going to move on to your neighbor or down the street," said Croyle. "Opening and closing a door attracts a lot less attention than smashing a window."

Residents of Windber and Paint Township are asked to check their vehicles and make sure there's nothing missing. If there is, give police a call.
