NAPIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Part of Route 30 in Bedford County was closed for several hours after a tanker truck transporting 9,000 gallons of propane overturned.

County emergency management officials said the propane did not leak and there was no imminent danger, but the 18-wheel truck had to be righted and removed.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. near the Jean Bonnet Tavern in Napier Township. There were no reported injuries, and the closed portion of Route 30 reopened just around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

As a precaution, officials started evacuating homes and businesses within a half-mile area around the crash site around 7 a.m. Bedford County EMS Director Dave Cubbison said crews were concerned that even a small propane leak would cause serious problems.

Emergency officials said the evacuations went as smoothly as possible. There was no shelter set up, but crews asked people to leave for a few hours and return after 11 a.m. The evacuation affected about 50 people.

In a news release, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) was closed from the intersection of Quaker Valley Road in Bedford Township to the intersection of Allegheny Road in Napier Township. Route 31 in Bedford County was also closed from the Route 96 intersection to the Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) intersection. A detour redirected motorists to Route 96 and to Route 56 and then back to Route 30 or 31.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash. Stay with 6 News, WJACTV.com and WJACTV.com Mobile for continuing coverage.
