Tax Credit Could Cause Problems

With the economic downturn, a little extra cash could go a long way. However, if taxpayers are not careful they could end up having to pay up if they are not careful.

The Making Work Pay Tax Credit gives individual filers $400 and couples $800. It is part of President Barack Obama's stimulus plan.

Problems could arise for couples if both spouses are working. Both spouses could get the tax credit of $800, but since that amount is for a couple they will have to pay $800. This problem will also arise for individuals who have more than one job. They could receive the tax credit for each job but then owe during next tax season.

To fix the problem people should fill out a new W-4 form. The key line to pay attention to is line 6. People should withhold the amount they would get from the tax credit each pay period.
