Tax Hike Included In State College School District Budget

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. —

Taxes in the State College School District will be going up if the district's proposed budget, but officials in the district's business office kept the proposed increase is well below the state's maximum allowed.

The 2008-2009 fiscal year starts in July and the State College Area School District's proposed budget sits at approximately $106 million. If passed, that would lead to a 3.7 percent increase in property taxes, which is below the state's Act One limit of 4.4 percent. The increase would be about an $83 increase in taxes per homeowner.

Sixteen new positions, from teachers to custodians to coaches, are being added to staffing levels next year.

The school board will hear the budget proposal Monday night and will discuss it next week.

A public hearing is scheduled for June 2 before the vote which is scheduled June 9.
