Tax Preparers Want Folks In The Alleghenies Prepared For 2009

Pennsylvania has been talking about property tax reform for a long time, but this season it will be nationwide. And you could save up to $1,000.

A.C. Stickel VI, president of The Tax Shelter, says you can deduct up to $500 in real estate taxes if you're single and up to $1,000 if you're married. In previous years, you needed to itemize your deductions to take real estate taxes, meaning you had to have more than the standard deductions for married couples with over $10,000.

"That is significant because if you're somebody who's not used to itemizing, then you're not used to saving your receipts or using those receipts for that purpose," Stickel said.

There's also a new deduction for volunteer firefighters. You can receive a $100 credit this year. You should check with your fire chief for more information.
