Teen Drivers Urged To Slow Down

Somerset County police said speeding was a factor in a crash Monday that left one teen dead and four others injured.

Now, some local school administrators are trying to stress to teens the importance of slowing down and driving safe.

Michael Coddington, 17, of Berlin, died in the crash along East Mud Pike in Brothers Valley Township.

Coddington was the second Berlin-area teen to die in a crash in just over a month. Three others in the car with Coddington remain hospitalized.

In the wake of the accident, some school administrators are questioning if drivers education courses are necessary. At present, many Pennsylvania school districts do not require drivers ed, which teaches driving basics.

Kathy Shaulis, a drivers education instruction at Richland High School in Cambria County, said drivers ed should be mandatory.

Shaulis said teens are at high-risk for accidents when driving alone or with friends, but said teens are still apt to speed no matter what life-saving lessons they may have been taught.

She said one of the most important safety measures is wearing a seatbelt.

"With some of the most recent crashes, the deaths have occurred from the children not wearing their seatbelts," Shaulis said.

"I feel that maybe we as instructors can show them evidence that if you use your seatbelt, you may survive a crash or only get minor injuries instead of a death," she said.

State Rep. Rick Geist said Pennsylvania increased license requirements six years ago. At that time, studies indicated that drivers education courses were not especially helpful for students when the actually got out on the road on their own.
