Teens Search For Crashed Plane

Somerset County —

The Civil Air Patrol is called out to 95 percent of inland plane searches. Today they had their seasonal drill and the majority of the ground searchers were teens.

With foggy skies, an aerial spot is out of the question. So ground search and rescue parties scour the countryside in hopes of finding the downed plain. The average age of the searchers is between 12 and 18.

These junior high and high school students join the C.A.P. for various reasons: from future military plans to the love of aviation. Today, they were placed in a real-life event, not knowing what kind of gruesome scene they may find. They have to react quickly because they could be the difference between life and death.

"It's kind of cool that you can actually go to your school and tell someone that you actually did something that was important and do the same job as a state trooper," says 16-year-old First Lieutenant Josh Zuyfang.

"I think it's awesome because most people think you have to be in the military and do this and that, but you really don't. You can do anything at any age," says 15-year-old Ashley Pugh.

These heroic young men and women are trained to take care of the injured until the professionals arrive. About 88 people from all over Western Pennsylvania were in Somerset County to take part in the exercise.
