The Liberty Museum Is Being Restored

NANTY GLO, Pa. —

Over $1 million is being spent on restoring a historical landmark in Cambria County, and it is all from donations.

A lifelong resident of Nanty Glo, Paul Kaschalk, said, "I think it's a great place to have a museum, I really do, because it is old and it's a long-time historic site."

Kaschalk remembered going to the Liberty Theatre as a young boy, when it only cost nine cents. Years ago, there were five theaters that showed films in Nanty Glo, but over the years the theatres have slowly disappeared. The Liberty Theatre is now the only building still standing. Nanty Glo's Historical Society purchased the building for just $1.

Project manager and treasurer James Toth said, "The overall goal is to help visitors find a connection between their lives and the lives of struggling mining families during the 1920s and 1940s.'

Both young and old people from all over the area are volunteering to help restore the old theatre, letting the new generation appreciate and value their life styles now.

Eddie Nihart, who is a young volunteer, thinks "it's pretty old stuff, and it's neat to learn how things were done back in the days."

Renovations are expected to wrap up by December of 2008, but in the meantime the historical society is still accepting donations and volunteers.
