The Push For More Gun Restrictions

CAMBRIA COUNTY —

Philadelphia has had roughly 300 homicides so far this year, and now state politicians are looking into ways to lower that number. But, some say they're going about it the wrong way. As hunting season approaches, gun sales are increasing throughout the region. But soon, there could be more restrictions for consumers.

Some lawmakers in Harrisburg are pushing for stricter guidelines. One of the proposals would limit the number of guns you can buy to one per month. However, not everyone thinks it's a good idea.

"I still think that criminals will be able to get more than one gun a month, says Paul Hornick or Hornick's Sporting Goods in Johnstown. "I don't think criminals are going into gun stores and buying three or four guns legally."

Another idea being proposed would make it the gun owner's responsibility if their weapon was lost or stolen, and used in a crime. National Rifle Association members says that should be common sense, not a law. Gun owners say, in a rural area like Johnstown, the new regulations would never fly and they expect the NRA will fight lawmakers on this issue.

"When we look at this," says NRA member Bill Haslett, "It can become a slippery slope. You start to take away rights and you never get them back."

To prevent crimes fueled by rage, the proposal would also institute a waiting period before a gun could be purchased.
