The Vote Is In On Johnstown's Budget

Cambria County —

Coming down to the wire, with not much room to spare, eight members of Johnstown's City Council voted Monday night on the 2006 City Budget. With five yes votes to three no votes, it passed.

With it's preliminary passing, Johnstown residents could see a three-mill tax increase. That means if your home is worth 100 thousand, you will shell out an extra $100 a year, which amounts to a little more than eight dollars a month. City Council member Red Pinizzotto says this increase could be tough for those on fixed incomes and that's why he voted against the proposed budget.

"Three-mills is three-mills. Doesn't sound like much, but to some people on fixed incomes, 30 to 40 dollars is a lot of money. It could be a prescription for that," says Pinizzotto.

On the other hand, Mayor Don Zucco voted for the budget and says they really don't have a choice not to raise the taxes.

"It's fairly minimal. Although nobody wants a tax increase and we understand that, but the alternative is to cut back on services which we didn't want to do," says the Mayor.

This vote is only for the preliminary passing of the budget. For the next 10 days, the budget will sit for public comment and be voted on December 30, which is putting pressure on a yes vote because the budget has to be officially passed by the end of the year or else the city can't open its doors on January 1.
