Thousands Eligible For Property Tax, Rent Rebates

BELLEFONTE, Pa. —

The Centre County Office of Aging is urging people across the Alleghenies to find out if they are eligible for property tax and rent rebates. According to the state office, more than 15,000 people across the area who are eligible -- and 200,000 across the state -- don't know it.

Basic guidelines have been expanded this year, which is another reason people might not realize they're eligible. For example, last year, if someone 65 or older made more than $15,000 a year, they weren't eligible for a property tax rebate. Now, that same age group is eligible, even if the make up to $35,000 a year. Renters age 65 and older are eligible if they make less than $15,000 a year.

The amount of the rebate depends upon income, but it ranges from $250 to $650. The deadline to apply for the rebates is Dec. 31. Some people under the age of 65 -- including widows and disabled people -- are eligible. You can find more information on our "As Mentioned" page.
