Thousands of local right-to-life supporters in Washington, D.C., for March For Life demonstration

By WJAC Web Staff

One of the largest anti-abortion demonstrations in history is under way in the nation's capital, and thousands of right-to-life supporters from the local area are participating.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected on the National Mall for the March For Life, calling for the reversal of the U.S. Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade which legalized abortion.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark ruling. A new poll this week showed most Americans don't want the law overturned, but 19 states enacted stricter abortion laws in the last year.

Thousands of right-to-life supporters from the Alleghenies are taking part in the March For Life. Some left early Friday from Somerset County, boarding buses in Windber for the all-day trip. They will likely be marching in snow or freezing rain, but people who spoke with 6 News said they believe the effort is worth it to get their message across.

Carl Rosenbaum said, "We'd like to demonstrate and tell people we believe life begins at the point of conception and not when you're born. And we have to stop this senseless slaughter of children."

Friday's attendance was expected to be one of the largest ever to mark the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.
