Thrift Store Gets Trash As Donations

When St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store opened Friday morning, it found two soiled mattress and a bag of trash as donations. Instead of the nonprofit store sorting the items for sale, it is paying a dump company to haul away the unusable items.

This has always been a problem for the thrift store. There is a city ordinance that prevents people from dumping items in front of the store and even on the sidewalks. Store officials said some people leave items in good condition, but then others stop by and get their first pick of the items. They then leave the leftover goods scattered in front of the store. Things get even messier when it rains and all of the donations get soiled.

Volunteers at St. Vincent are hoping people will be more considerate and realize with the current economy, they've been helping even more people. The thrift store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's located on Vine Street in Johnstown.
