Toxic Air: How To Find Out If Your Child Is At Risk

We send our children to school with hopes they will be safe, but a recent investigation found that many schools across the country are surrounded by toxic air. It's called the smokestack effect.

To find out if your child's school is surrounded by toxins - go to the "Toxic Air" link on the WJAC Web site and that will take you to the USA Today article. Type in your school district and the county and see how it ranks with other schools around the country.

For example, Ferndale High School in Cambria County is listed in the 9th percentile when it comes to toxins found in the air. The elementary school is in the 15th percentile. The lower the number, the worse the pollution.

The investigation, done by USA Today, shows exactly what types of toxins were found around the school and which companies may play a role in that air pollution.

For Ferndale High School, manganese was found, as well as nickel and sulfuric acid.

Parents said they are concerned.

"It is very upsetting and I'm surprised," said Wayne Wallace, a parent from Ferndale Elementary. "I would like to see a solution to the problem so our children are not exposed to these toxins."
