Transportation Crisis Summit

Johnstown Road Project Funding

Johnstown City Council members, Cambria County Commissioners and state legislators all united with one goal in mind, to bring highway money back to Johnstown.

Johnstown's Mayor is in charge of the Transportation Crisis Summit. It's an effort to find out how tens of millions of dollars worth of road project funding slipped through the cracks.

Mayor Don Zucco called the summit to find a way to get over 80 million dollars of funding for road projects back to the city. One concern stood out above all the others...officials say Johnstown will struggle to bring more jobs to the area if roads, like Route 56 in the West End and Route 219 aren't improved and quickly. The unanimous decision is to head to Governor Rendell's office after the summit committee gathers all the answers to its questions.

Mayor Zucco says, "We need to go back and take a look at, historically, have we gotten significant projects in terms of the other planning units, when was the last time we had a significant project in our MPO and of 2,600 projects, why of only 26 that got eliminated why were two of those critical in Cambria County?"

Zucco tells Channel 6 the Summit Committee will meet again in two weeks, combine their reports and select who'll be on the team to meet with Governor Rendell.
