Traveling evangelist accused of raping child testifies in own defense

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. —

A traveling evangelist accused of raping a girl in a Bedford County motel took the stand in his own defense Thursday morning.

The Rev. Walter Bradshaw admitted that the 11-year-old child spent the night with him when he stayed at the Janey Lynn Motel for a revival in 2009. But the North Carolina man denied ever molesting or raping the child.

The girl's mother was called to the stand again for the second day of the trial. The woman testified her daughter has been known to lie, but their family was misled and no longer trusts Bradshaw.

The girl's mother pleaded no contest in April to charges including endangerment and soliciting perjury. Investigators said the woman knew Bradshaw intended to have sex with her daughter then encouraged the girl to lie to police. The mother was sentenced to two to five years in jail.

Bradshaw was arrested in 2010 after the girl reported the encounter, and he has been in jail since then.

On Wednesday, the accuser, who is now 15, testified that Bradshaw sexually assaulted her and continued contacting her after he was told to stop.

Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins played a recording of a phone call, including a portion where Bradshaw told the victim that she had come on to him, but that he apologized for the inappropriate acts.

Bradshaw's defense attorney questioned the truthfulness of the accuser and motioned for a mistrial following her testimony, which was overruled.

The jury could get the case this afternoon.
