Trees For Troops kicking off holiday season

By Melanie Gillespie

INDIANA, Pa. —

Trees For Troops sends more than 17,000 Christmas trees overseas each year, but it’s a program that means much, much more than that.

It’s not always about picking out the perfect tree, but for Flemings Christmas Tree Farm, it’s about finding the perfect home.

"I think we all realize what the soldiers do for us, and when you think about, ya know, them not being home, and you want to say thank you, what a better way,” J.D. Fleming said.

And, no better way than to deliver a piece of holiday cheer to troops overseas, that’s why the farm got involved in the Trees For Troops program seven years ago.

"I've had soldiers stop by here at the farm, and talk 45 minutes on what a Christmas tree means to a soldier who is not at home during the holidays," Fleming said.

It takes 25 dollars and a hand-written message tagged onto the tree, and the donation is sent overseas and distributed throughout the Middle East.

It’s a way to send a piece of home to an American hero.

"We do get a lot of local families coming in, knowing that there's a chance that their son or daughter may receive a tree, or they know what it's like to be away, and they want some soldiers to have one," Fleming said.

This year will mark the program’s 100,000th tree donated, making it all worth it for many more years to come.

"The thank you’s, the feeling you get, doing the program, makes you just continue to do it, and makes you very happy that we did start seven years ago," Fleming said.

The Fleming Christmas Tree Farm is anticipating a busy weekend, but encourages folks to come out and donate a tree, and even enjoy some live entertainment down on the farm.
