BEDFORD, Pa. —

Prosecutors rested their case against a traveling evangelist accused of raping a child during the first day of trial inside the Bedford County courthouse Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said 63-year-old Rev. Walter Bradshaw, a traveling preacher from Lexington, N.C., is facing nearly two-dozen charges connected to the alleged sexual assault of a girl in the Janey Lynn Motel in 2009.

Police said Bradshaw was in the area holding revival meetings at churches throughout the region at the time of the alleged assault.

He was arrested in 2010 after the girl reported the encounter, and he has been in jail since then.

The 15-year-old accuser testified that Bradshaw sexually assaulted her and continued contacting her after he was told to stop.

Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins played a recording of a phone call, including a portion where Bradshaw told the victim that she had come on to him, but that he apologized for the inappropriate acts.

The girl's mother pleaded no contest in April to charges including endangerment and soliciting perjury. Investigators said she knew Bradshaw intended to have sex with her daughter then encouraged the girl to lie to police. The mother was sentenced to two to five years in jail.

Bradshaw’s defense attorney questioned the truthfulness of the accuser and motioned for a mistrial following her testimony, which was overruled.
