Trusted Doctor Sued

Blair County —

Sandy Shamberger, of Indiana County, gave birth to two children with the help of her OBGYN, Dr. Deborah Pike. Dr. Pike then transferred her practice from Indiana to Nason Hospital in Roaring Springs. Shamberger became pregnant again, and she wanted Pike to deliver the baby, so she made the trip to Blair County.

The problems began when Sandy went into labor. Dr. Pike was on vacation. Sandy was told another doctor from Dr. Pike's practice would be there to deliver her baby. The lawsuit says when the Shambergers arrived, a nurse midwife, not a doctor was in charge of the delivery. Sandy was supposed to have a c-section but a doctor wasn't around to perform it. Baby TJ's heart rate began to speed up, so the on call physician was notified and gave instructions by phone. After he was born, Baby TJ had to be transferred to a hospital in Johnstown. TJ is now one year old and is severely handicapped. The Shambergers say they're suing because they don't want to see this happen to anyone else.

"We want everybody to know they need to check to make sure it's a facility that can take care of infants born in distress," says Sandy.

Dr. Pike, her practice, and Nason Hospital are all being sued for negligence. Baby TJ receives therapy here in Johnstown and has an unknown future.
