Turnpike Offers Employees Early Retirement Packages

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission's profits for this year have been slipping, due to high gas prices stopping some people from driving on the turnpike. To ease its budget concerns, the turnpike has offered some of its employees early retirement.

WJAC-TV spoke with turnpike officials over the phone Friday. They said fewer employees will not affect drivers or any road projects already planned. Like everyone else, they are preparing for a continued dismal economy.

Right now, officials don't know how many employees will need to take the offer. They also don't know if they will have to lay off some workers if few people take the early buyout.
