Turnpike toll rates increase; Officials push electronic form of payment

By Melanie Gillespie

PENNSYLVANIA —

Drivers: Beware. Tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike are up, but representatives are pushing other alternatives when it comes to saving money through forms of payment.

This year, cash-paying drivers will see an increase of 10%, but the incentive comes with the E-ZPass where the increase is only 2%.

The cash-free option is a transition that could come with time. Thousands of tires hit the turnpike every day.

"I live in Michigan, but I used to live in New Jersey," Bert Walliczek said.

Instead of sitting idle at cash-only booths, Walliczek invested in an E-ZPass.

"It's very convenient to go right through," Walliczek said.

With rates already up, Walliczek is saving about 25% over cash-paying drivers.

Electronic payment is an incentive that the turnpike is using to get more customers to go cash-free.

"Well, they're switching to it to save money by far that's the number one reason," Manager of Media and Public Relations Renee Vid Colborn said.

According to the turnpike, 68% already use the E-ZPass in Pennsylvania to save cash and travel time.

"Especially at certain times of the day or in certain states when you really have heavy traffic," Walliczek said.

It may be the wave of the future. The turnpike said it's considering transitioning completely electronic within 5 to 6 years.

"There's legislation to deal with; there's all kind of issues we're looking into. So, it's nothing we can just jump right in and say, yeah, we're all electronic tomorrow. It's going to take some time," Vid Colborn said.

But even E-ZPass customers aren't excluded from increases.

The turnpike said not only is it making up for a transportation-funding shortfall, but also contributes $50 million a year to PennDot, in addition to a plan of its own.

"We're completely rebuilding from the ground up; expanding from four lanes to six lanes on the turnpike," Vid Colborn said.

The turnpike said it will be some time before E-ZPass is the only accepted form of payment.
