Two Men Charged in String of Philipsburg Robberies

By Gary Sinderson

PHILIPSBURG, Pa

They needed money for drugs--police say that's why two Clearfield County men are behind bars tonight after being charged in two armed robberies. They're accused of robbing convenience stores in downtown Philipsburg.

And Philipsburg State Police tell us after months of investigation, they filed charges after one of the suspects told them, “Yeah I did it.” He added he needed the money to feed his heroin habit.

Monroe Bell of Grassflat was charged Thursday morning in connection with two armed robberies. The first was last October at a Minit Mart in Philipsburg.

Police say Bell admits trying to hold up the store with a gun, except it didn’t go well. A bystander knocked the BB gun out of his hand, but Bell is accused of still getting away with $350 in cash and cigarettes.

Two months later, in December, police say Bell, this time armed with a knife, held up a tobacco store in Philipsburg. Jason McGonical, also of Grassfalt, is accused of helping Bell with that hold up, where $900 worth of cash and cigarettes were stolen.

Philipsburg State Police tell us that Monroe Bell not only confessed to the robberies, but he gave them clothing he was wearing during the crimes, which matched what was seen on the stores surveillance cameras.

Bell telling police he needed money for his drug habit and did fear that they would eventually catch him. Both men jailed tonight on $100,000 dollars bail.
