Two Somerset County boys found dead in a cedar chest in their parents bedroom early Wednesday morning. There are many unanswered questions as to why they were there in the first place.
Somerset County Coroner, Wallace Miller says, "The boys had a habit of sleeping wherever she was. So, she was down in that living room, so they were sleeping down there. She fell asleep."
That was the last time Heather Baker saw her two little boys alive. Now police continue their investigation.
Miller told Channel 6 Thursday night, it took about an hour for the boys to suffocate and they were in the chest for about eight hours. The boys' father came home and went to bed around 1 am. The chest was at the foot of that bed.
Miller says, "Apparently they were deceased before the father went to bed because he didn't hear anything."
Around 7:30 in the morning Heather Baker and Nathan Leydig realized their sons were missing.
Miller says, "The parents were the people who actually opened the chest and found the boys and they extracated them and placed them on the bed in an effort to administer CPR."
There were bruises on five year old Anthony's knuckles and the coroner says that could mean one of two things. Either the boys tried to get out of the chest or they were your typical, active children. Investigators tested the chest to see if it latched each time it closed.
Miller says, "On some of the occasions it did latch, on other occasions, it didn't."
Miller says the chest isn't air tight, but there was little room for air to get in. The chest was filled with blankets and fresh air couldn't be replaced quickly enough.
Miller says, "The older of the two boys may have had a little better cognizance that they were in danger and once you do that, you get upset and you start to breathe faster."
Channel 6 asked Miller if the kids played in the chest in the past.
"I really can't comment about that at this point."
The police continue their investigation and Miller says that's mainly why he can't comment.
