CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

A local store and organization have teamed up to thank those who served our country with a one-of-a-kind benefit this upcoming Veterans Day.

A veteran herself, Connie Kostelnick, and her friend Joyce Scappino -- who are both members of the Daughters Of The American Revolution-- worked hard for three months to put together a unique quilt with historical significance.

"Each block represents one of the ladies that was important in the Revolutionary War process, and along with the quilt is going to be a CD that tells (about) each and every one of these ladies with a picture of the block that is pertinent to them," Scappino said.

The quilt features women like Martha Washington, who is represented in the center block.

Kostelnick said, "It just kind of grew on its own. … I don't think we had any steps planned. It just took off."

Recognizing the beauty and significance of the quilt, Cindy Martin, owner of Creative Fabrics and Quilt Shop in Ebensburg, jumped at the opportunity to help out and displayed it in her store.

"When she brought it in, I was just amazed." Martin said. "My parents were both in the Army. My ex-husband was also in the Army, so obviously I'm a big supporter of the veterans."

Next, the women started selling raffle tickets to raise money for veterans.

"(As) soon as the news got out, people were coming in … just to help with it as well," Martin said.

As of noon Friday, the women had collected more than $600 in raffle tickets. Anyone who would like to purchase a ticket can stop at the Creative Fabrics and Quilt Shop. On Monday, the winner of the raffle will be chosen at the Johnstown Veterans Day parade.
