United States Postal Service cuts saturday delivery

By Kerri Corrado

“For the last five years mail service changed. America communication habits are changing and with that a lot less mail volume coming through our system,” Western PA Postal Service Spokesman Tad Kelley said.

The United States Postal Service announced a slight change in their system. They will eliminate Saturday delivery on August 5, 2013.

“And now we feel it is time to move from six to five day delivery,” said Kelley.

This decision in hopes to save money; 2 billion dollars.

“We close out our fiscal yea 2012 with a billion dollar deficit. We desperately need to reduce our costs and get ourselves in the size of American mail usage,” said Kelley.

Now this means packages like mail order medicine and express mail will still be delivered, whereas first class mail such as letters, bills, cards, ad catalogs will no longer be available.

People have mixed emotions about the change.

“Our customers have consistently said “ do the right thing. DO not become a burden for tax payers and our customers have also told us , we want packages on Saturday,” Post Master General Patrick Donahoe said.
