Unwanted Pests

Altoona —

The beetles could come in from other states, but they don't come by flight. Instead they travel on firewood. The adult beetle may not be seen on the firewood, but it could be infested with an immature stage of the insects. Because of this, firewood is not supposed to be brought in from other states, such as Michigan, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey. These beetles are not here yet, but if they were to come, they could kill ash trees. The park manager offers some advice to campers.

"If they brought firewood with them, they should burn it when they're here, but not take any with them when they leave, so it doesn't spread anywhere else. So, use what your bring in," says Park Manager Barry Wolfe.

Just to be safe, even if you have firewood from Pennsylvania that should not be infested with anything, the park suggests getting firewood from wherever you decide to camp.
