UPDATE: Obama's Remarks At Penn State Open To Invitation-Only Crowd

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. —

Officials at Penn State and the White House confirmed with WJAC-TV that Pres. Barack Obama will visit campus next week.

A White House statement said Obama’s visit to the University Park campus is part of the administration’s goal of advancing domestic research development, promoting energy-efficient building practices and developing renewable energy production.

Officials say Obama will offer remarks on the importance of research being done at the Penn State Energy Innovation Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

At Tuesday’s State of the Union address, Obama said that the administration is working harder to foster the development of clean energy sources.

"In a few weeks, I will be sending a budget to Congress that helps us meet that goal,” said Obama. “We'll invest in biomedical research, information technology and especially clean energy technology."

Rep. Scott Conklin told WJAC-TV that the renewed focus on clean energy innovation could spark job creation in the Alleghenies.

"Renewable energy is the business of the future. Any way that we can use the technology of the university and get jobs into Central Pennsylvania, it's a win-win across the board,” said Conklin. “I'm excited to hear that the president of the United State is coming right here to Central Pennsylvania."

WJAC-TV confirmed on Sunday the following a tour of facilities at Penn State, Obama's remarks will open to an invitation-only crowd. Stay with WJAC-TV and wjactv.com for the latest on this developing story.
