UPDATE: Tyrone Teachers Vote Tuesday

TYRONE, Pa. —

Teacher contract negotiations continued at Tyrone Area School District on Monday. The fact-finder looking into the district's teacher contract released his report Monday.

On Tuesday, the teachers will vote on whether to accept or reject the report.

Sid Young, the regional field director for the PSEA, said the Tyrone School Board must hold a public meeting within 10 days to vote to accept or reject the report. He said if both sides accept, there will be contract. If the teachers or the school board reject the report, it will be made public.

Then, there is a cooling off period before a second vote would take place five to 10 days later.

If no agreement is met after the second vote, teachers would be able to strike. This would be as early as Sept. 11. Teachers are required to notify the public 48 hours before a strike occurs.

Young said a strike at the beginning of the school year could be the lengthiest because the school calendar would be adjusted accordingly.

School must be in session for 180 days before June 15, 2007.

Steve Everhart, the chief negotiator for the teachers, said their primary goal is to have a compacted salary schedule. This means teachers would achieve their maximum career pay rate in less years.

Students at Tyrone begin classes on Wednesday.
