U.S. Supreme Court upholds health care law

Individual mandate stands

By WJAC Web Staff

President Obama's historic and controversial health care law is not unconstitutional according to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a 5-4 ruling, justices upheld most key provisions, including one that requires most Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

Other programs rolled out by the law, including improved access to insurance and free preventive care will also remain intact. Children will continue to remain on their parent's insurance policies until age 26.

"Today's decision was a victory for people all over this country," President Obama said in a televised address shortly after the ruling was made.

But not all lawmakers are happy with the decision.

"I disagree with the Supreme Court's decision on the individual mandate, which is why I voted to repeal it," said democratic congressman Mark Critz, of Johnstown.

Governor Tom Corbett, who was among a group of state attorneys general to file a lawsuit to have the law overturned, said that the law is not good policy, and will harm small businesses and families.
