House relocated a mile down the road

By Maria Miller

SIDMAN, Pa. —

It's definitely something you don't see every day -- a house traveling down the road. But 6 News was there Wednesday morning as people lined the streets in a local community to watch a house be relocated a mile down the road.

Built in the early 1950's, the home belonged to Meade Bailey's in-laws. He's been taking care of it since they passed away.

"The house has just been sitting there cause we had been debating on what we were going to do with it," said Bailey.

When Jessica Fleegle's family saw the house and learned it was available, they jumped at the chance to purchase it and move it to their property about a mile down the road.

"We were looking into modular homes and stick homes," said Fleegle. "Then this just kind of fell into our laps and we decided to go with this."

"They came and looked at it and said this is exactly the house that we were looking for," said Bailey.

Cable and electric companies had to take down power lines and tree limbs needed to be removed. But a company out of Everett, Pa. was able to move the house to its new home as people lined the streets to watch.

"Every evening there's been people stopping," said Bailey. "(They take) pictures and look around"

"This doesn't happen a lot so it's definitely a unique thing," said Fleegle.

Both sides called it a win-win situation.

"I love the house," said Fleegle. "It's a very nice house and it was taken care of the whole entire time that the owner had lived in it and I'm just very grateful to have it."

"Instead of either tearing it down, which we didn't want to do, this way another generation is living in it," said Bailey. "It's going to be around a while."

The Fleegle family said there's still quite a bit that needs to be done before Jessica can move in. They need to dig a foundation, install sewer equipment and fix up the outside. They admitted that building a new house probably would have been cheaper, but said it's been a unique experience and the house was exactly what they were looking for.
