Vacant Buildings To Be Torn Down In Jefferson County

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. —

The Department of Environmental Protection is getting ready to tear down two structures in Punxsutawney that are contaminating the groundwater.

The old Berlin Metals building and a vacant house on Cherry Street will come down on July 12.

The owners of that house said contamination in the basement has made it uninhabitable.

Since 2006, the DEP has been working to clean up the properties.

It was discovered that the old electroplating businesses polluted the soil and continues to dirty the groundwater.

Officials said hexavalent chromium infiltrated the floor at that business.

Residents said those chemicals are behind a wide variety of illnesses.

A public meeting on the demolition will be held next Wednesday at the Punxsutawney Borough building.
