WINDBER, Pa. —

A vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant in Windber on Monday morning then the driver took off, leaving being a mess and traffic jam.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on Graham Avenue and Hayes Street in Paint Township, not far from Windber Elementary School.

When crews arrived at the scene, the Windber Fire Department immediately turned off the water gushing from the hydrant.

Water flowed down Hayes Street and a telephone pole next to the hydrant was damaged. Officials said the biggest concern was possible flooding and crews checked with nearby residents to make sure their basements weren't flooded.

"I mean, you'll have some erosion and stuff like that and some people may have water in their basement, but the ground will take up most of it (and) the storm sewer," said Windber Fire Department Capt. Anson Bloom.

Crews directed traffic until they had the situation under control.

As of Monday afternoon, Paint Township police said the damage was most likely caused by a larger vehicle like a truck or bus.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
