Viewer tips lead to arrest of accused hit-and-run driver; pedestrian recovering from surgery

By Bill Wadell

DECATUR TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Officers said anonymous tips from 6News viewers led to the arrest of a man accused of hitting a pedestrian then speeding away near Chester Hill Tuesday night.

Decatur Township police arrested Christopher Ray Johnson, 20, Philipsburg, on a probation violation Wednesday night, and charged him Thursday afternoon with six offenses, including accidents involving personal injury or death, reckless driving, duty to give information and render aid and disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, Johnson and a friend jumped in his car and started chasing another man who ran away from them after a fight nearby.

Officers say Johnson saw a man walking alongside Decatur Street around 8 p.m., sped toward him at a high rate of speed and attempted to swerve over and stop to see if it was the man he was looking for, but he lost control and struck the pedestrian.

Police said Johnson admitted to the incident and confessed that he drove away knowing that he had hit a person and “was afraid of the outcome of the crash."

Court documents indicate that several 6News viewers called police, one tipster saying that a red car had sped away from the scene and another caller told police that a Red Dodge Intrepid with damage to the front end, hood and smashed windshield was parked in a Philipsburg parking lot the next morning.

Neighbors told 6News that they are relieved at the news of an arrest but said they’re still concerned with constant speeding and the lack of a stop sign at an intersection just yards away from the location where the pedestrian was hit.

"I'm glad they caught the guy because a lot of people walk up and down here any time of night,” said Tim Whitehead. “If it was intentional, I think they deserve what they get. They should have stopped and saw what they hit anyway."

"Maybe we'll go up and down the street with a petition and get people to sign it or something like that,” said Paul Hohman. “Say ‘Hey, we need (a stop sign). The slow signs aren't doing the trick."

Court documents said the pedestrian who was hit, 29-year-old Justin Stamm, had just finished visiting with his father and was walking to his home a short distance away on Decatur Street when he was struck.

Family members told 6News off-camera that Stamm is recovering from leg surgery at Altoona Regional Health System, that he’s in good spirits and that they’re thankful to the people who called police with tips.

Decatur Township police indicated that a second person could be charged in connection to the hit-and-run investigation.
