STATE COLLEGE, Pa. —

A candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. tonight to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of longtime Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno.

The group that planned the vigil, Inspiration Way, is also hoping to build a memorial brick walkway in State College.

Organizers said they will light 409 candles, one for each of Paterno's victories before 111 were stripped as part of NCAA sanctions in response to the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.

Sandusky was convicted in June 2012 of 45 counts of child sex abuse and is serving a lengthy prison sentence. His arrest tarnished Penn State's storied football program and led to Paterno's firing.

Paterno was the team's head coach for 46 years and was fired just weeks before he said he planned to retire. He died of lung cancer at age 85.

The vigil is scheduled to be held near a mural in downtown State College that once depicted Paterno wearing a halo.

Paterno's son, Scott, posted via Twitter: "I appreciate the prayers today, but would ask that you take action as well. Give to THON '13. It's how we show what 'we are' means."

Last week, two Penn State trustees paid tribute to Joe Paterno. Trustee Anthony Lubrano at a board meeting Friday said Paterno's 61 years of service and "success with honor" could not be covered up. Trustee Alvin Clemens later listed athletic and academic accomplishments under Paterno's watch.
