War Memorial Board Members Propose Deal To Keep Hockey In Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN —

The Cambria County War Memorial Arena Board of Directors said they have come up with a deal they believe will keep professional hockey in Johnstown.

Board members said they will continue to run arena concessions, but in an effort to meet Chiefs' Owner Jim Weber's plea for a deal that will pump more cash into the Chiefs and keep the team in Johnstown, members will give the club 100 percent of profits above a certain net revenue total.

"We think it's a very viable offer. We think that is mutually beneficial for both, especially for the Chiefs. That has been our concern. How do we save the Chiefs and how do we help the Chiefs? We have opened up and worked diligently over the last three weeks to come to a proposal," said Board Chairman Larry Giannone.

At least one area business owner said keeping the Chiefs in Johnstown would be good for area business.

According to Scott McLaughlin, owner of Scott's By Dam, a bar only a block away from the arena, if the Chiefs' leave, nearly a third of his business will be lost as well.

However, McLaughlin said money is not the only thing that would be lost if the Chiefs left.

McLaughlin said in the 15 years he's been in business, he's met a lot of new friends who may never have stepped through his doors if the Chiefs were not playing hockey across the street.
